In the course of the European IPP, the European thematic strategies on waste, resources and others, many activities are underway with LCA playing a core role. What's even more important: the stakeholders are working together very constructively. We are happy about this development and strongly support this process. Read more about some of these important projects in the 'Consulting' and 'GaBi' sections.
In early spring, the "Department of Life Cycle Engineering" (GaBi), our longterm scientific partner, moved from the Institute for Polymer Testing and Polymer Science (IKP, Prof. Peter Eyerer) to the Chair for Building Physics (LBP, Prof. Klaus Sedlbauer). Klaus Sedlbauer is introduced in the following article.

To finish I must say a brief but emphatic word about Peter Eyerer: Without both his vision and his energy there would be no Life Cycle Engineering, no GaBi Department, no GaBi software and no PE! We are not saying good-bye, but we do say 'THANK YOU'!

The European Resilient Flooring Manufacturers' Institute (ERFMI) is pro-actively caring for the environmental marketing of its members' activities. ERFMI ordered a LCA model from PE Europe that all its members can use to environmentally assess their products and production on the basis of the same modelling conditions and same databases. ...more |

+++ European Standardisation on "Sustainability of Construction Works" (CEN TC 350) started work in most groups at the meeting on April 24-27 in Berlin. In this series of European standards, EPDs will be linked into the environmental assessment of buildings. PE is supporting the development of the CEN standards by serving as a delegate in the German delegation. +++ EAA-Alubuild launches the Sustainable Construction Project. The goal of EAA is to better position aluminium made products in the building sector, which is increasingly calling for environmental performance data. The target will be reached by developing an EAA scheme of Environmental Product Declarations and creating a user friendly tool allowing EAA's customers to produce their own EPDs. PE supported EAA in the development of the EPD scheme and is currently implementing the tool. +++

GaBi 4 offers full EcoSpold compatibility
A feature of the newly released, updated GaBi 4.2 software is its full compatibility with EcoSpold. From now on the GaBi system will be able to import information in an EcoSpold format and will also export datasets in an EcoSpold data file. GaBi 4 ecoinvent integrated customers receive a matching list for importing data from ecoinvent 1.2 into GaBi 4 databases in a consistent manner, despite the different nomenclatures. This leads to a full compatibility between GaBi 4 and ecoinvent. GaBi 4.2 offers an ergonomic editor to view and edit documentations according to the Eco-Spold format. |

Get out of the WEEE, RoHS and EuP trap with GaBi 4 DfX
The Ecodesign directive on EuP (Energy using Products), 2005/32/EC, has had a huge impact on the entire electronics industry. Experts from electronics associations such as the ZVEI comment: "The EuP will influence and change business more significantly than WEEE and RoHS put together have in the past!" Companies' business processes have to be adapted, to be able to take account of their environmental effects during the entire life cycle of all energy using products a company produces. ...more

Advanced LCI modelling at VW
At the workshop "Material Design and System Analysis - Integration of Economic and Environmental Aspects into the Development Phase" held in Karlsruhe, VW presented an efficient tool for LCA of complex products based on GaBi 4 DfX. VW has developed a semi-automated procedure, which allows the practitioner to compile LCIs of passenger cars in a fraction of the time formerly required. In addition, the procedure greatly enhances the consistency between LCA models of different vehicles. This ensures that differences in results are connected to product modifications rather than to modelling choices. In combination with the efficiency gains, this forms the basis for a continuous, successive environmental assessment of design measures. |

+++ In April the German business ethics network (DNWE) held its annual conference with the theme of 'intergenerational justice'. The topic produced considerable debates between participants from the spheres of economics, politics and science. Periods of dialogue were prolonged by discussion on sustainability - a subject that is drawing more and more attention. +++ 28th June: The 2nd SoFi user workshop for customers from German-speaking countries will be held in Echterdingen. New functions of SoFi will be presented. The main focus of the annual SoFi user workshop is to provide a platform for intersectoral communication and exchange of experiences between SoFi community members. To ensure continuous and practical improvement in SoFi?s performance, the workshop participants will be invited to take part in prioritizing further developments. +++

PE strengthens its capacities "Down Under"
The existing team of sales partners Dr. Greg Peters from CRC for Waste Management (Australia) and Dr. Barbara Nebel from SCION (New Zealand) has been extended by the addition of Mr. Simon Whitehouse and his wife Nicci. Simon and Nicci work as consultants at PE Consulting Group in the fields of transport, public transport, transport energy (alternative fuels) and sustainability. Prior to this Simon was Director of the Perth Fuel Cell Bus Project known as STEP - Sustainable Transport Energy for Perth. Simon is also actively contributing his expertise to the HyFLEET:CUTE project dealing with hydrogen powered buses in Europe. Nicci's background is in public policy development, including sustainability policy. |

Beside our own PE divisions in Europe, Asia, North America and Australia, long-term partnerships exist in a range of other countries. Just recently we were able to win sales partner in Kazakhstan and Malaysia. Cycle Management in Zurich (August 27-29, 2007) facilitates exchange of experience between actors from industrial enterprises and public institutions working on the application and implementation of life cycle approaches for sustainability, as well as on the development of associated tools. From December 7th to 8th 2006, the SETAC Europe 13th LCA Case Studies Symposium will take place in Stuttgart. Local organisers are PE Europe and University of Stuttgart. After the successful EPD conference organised by the German EPD scheme AUB in February, the focus of the Case Study Symposium will address scientific aspects of EPDs and their application in the Building and Construction Sector.
