LCA on energy production from agricultural grown biomass

The final report of a joint research project funded by the German Badenova AG on the energy production (power and heat) from agricultural biomass and its implications on agriculture and environment is now released. Additional tables and figures are compiled in an annex. Unfortunately, both documents are only available in German language.

The Sustainability of Packaging Systems for Fruit and Vegetable Transport in Europe based on Life-Cycle-Analysis

The “Stiftung Initiative Mehrweg” (“Foundation for Reusable Systems”, a foundation under German Civil Law) ordered a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) study to analyse the common packaging systems for fruit and vegetables in Europe with respect to the environmental impacts related to their use. Additionally, costs and selected social aspects were evaluated to address sustainability.

The study can be purchased from the Stiftung Initiative Mehrweg. Click here for the order form.

Enviromental Product Declarations (EPD) for construction products - Branch specific realisation of a type lll labelling scheme

This study, ordered by the German Federal Environmental Agency summarizes the current discussion on the content, methodology and procedure for quantitative, LCA Type lll environmental product declarations. This is achieved by a critical analysis of the development of environmental declaration programmes for construction products in Germany. The study was compiled by the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Typ III-Kennzeichnung (PE INTERNATIONAL GmbH, Five Winds Europe GmbH, FZK, Zentralabteilung Technikbedingte Stoffströme).

Project: Databases and product declarations for furniture

Professor Annik Magerholm Fet from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology gives a brief description of a EPD project within the Norwegian furniture industry. The goal of this project was to provide SMEs in the furniture industry with a tool that helped the companies to gather environmental information and to document this according to the requirements of ISO 14025.

LCA on SunDiesel

The eco-balance sheet study which was ordered jointly by Volkswagen and DaimlerChrysler comes to the conclusion that the use of so-called BTL-fuel (Biomass-To-Liquid), also known as SunFuel, can save between 61 and 91 percent of greenhouse gas emissions in comparison with conventional diesel over its complete lifecycle. In addition to the latter, hydrocarbon emissions, which contribute to summer smog, are reduced by about 90 percent by the use of SunFuel.

The Executive Summary of the eco-balance sheet study carried out by PE Europe can be downloaded here.

PVC Life Cycle Study

Ordered by the European Commission's Enterprise Directorate-General, the study was conducted by a consortium led by PE Europe GmbH.

The work's main aim is to provide an overview of the publicly available information on Life-Cycle Assessments (LCA) on PVC (polyvinyl chloride) and the main competing materials, for a variety of applications.

You will find the study on the following webpage of the European Commission:

Guideline: Communication of environmentally relevant indicators for the wood industry

The aim of the study is to assist companies of the forest and wood-based industries as well as the wood-manufacturing industry to better communication their environmental advantages.

The guideline enables the wood industry to effectively prepare and profitably adopt internal established (environmental) information. Furthermore, it highlights how environmentally relevant data can be generated pragmatically, and provides most value for the company or business, its employees and customers, and finally the environment.

LCA "building block": Thermal use of wooden products - input dependant modelling of the End-of-Life processes of wood.

The study clearly illustrates how important the recovery of used wood is, and accentuates the necessity for developing utilization concepts for waste wood.

The study contributes by appraising the "end-of-life" processes of wood products. Consistent with the LCA of the production phase of wood products, opportunities for an LCA of wood product's end of life have been developed and edited. Until now, generally, only "cradle-to-gate" examinations have been conducted. PE Europe's study considers the "gate-to-grave" phase, allowing future LCAs to assess the entire life cycle of wood products, i.e. "cradle-to-grave".

The models, together with the results of the study, allow the life path of wood products to be described, thoroughly specific to the product. The advantages of the material, in its thermal application, can thereby be identified.
